About this Event

On Saturday, October 1st, the Montrose Firefighter’s Association and the Montrose Recreation Foundation will proudly present the 15th Annual Black Canyon Sprint Triathlon. It begins with a 500 yard swim (10 laps) at the Montrose Aquatic Center, then continues with a 24K (14.6 mile) bike course winding through the west side of town, and wraps up with a 5K (3.1 mile) run that finishes at the aquatic center.

Check-in and packet pick-up is  Friday September 30th, from 5:30-8:00 p.m. at the Aquatic Center, 25 Colorado Ave, Montrose, Colorado. Please attend either briefing on Friday evening (6 or 7:00 p.m.) for additional information.

It is the responsibility of the participant to know the course. If the participant does not follow the proper course and distance they will be disqualified.

Parking: There will be limited parking at the Aquatic Center.  DO NOT PARK IN OR BLOCK PRIVATE DRIVEWAYS-YOU WILL BE TOWED!!!Plan on extra time to find a spot on Colorado Av., Rio Grande south of Colorado Av, The Waves of Mercy Church parking lot across the street, or better yet the Montrose HS parking lot to the north on the other side of the tennis courts and football field. NO PARKING ON RIO GRANDE NORTH OF COLORADO AVE!

Start Times: 8:00 a.m Start Time. The start order will be: Youth, Teams, Individuals. Timing chips will be available for pickup Saturday morning in the pool area.

Weather: If, in the opinion of the Race Committee, at ANY time during the race, the conditions are jeopardizing the safety of the participants then the event will be stopped.  It may, or may not, be re-started, and no refunds will be issued. Bring layers for the ever-changing Colorado weather during this time of year.

Swim: Pay attention to heat information which will be posted on Friday. Each heat is assigned based on age groups, as well as we can do, and is also assigned an approximate start time. Be ready to swim 30 minutes before your heat time. At your heat start time, you will be assigned a lane which you will share with another athlete. You will be instructed to stay on your side of the lane. No diving starts. Lap counters will notify you on last length. Due to the continuous swim heats, we have moved through the swim heats faster than expected so be prepared for an earlier start time!

Transition Area: Be respectful of other participants as the Transition area is open throughout the race. WALK or jog with your bike until you cross the line. Have your helmet buckled before you get on your bike. Nobody ever got penalized for having their helmet on too long! Teams: be aware of designated chip transfer areas! Penalties for No Helmet or riding in transition areas will be 5 minutes each occurrence.

Bike Course: Review the map. Ride under control on the right. Be prepared to deal with on your own minor mechanical (flats, etc.) repairs, NO drafting or pacing, pass on the left after making yourself known to others; Follow all applicable traffic laws, as well as directions of officers and staff, as all roads other than Rio Grande north of the Aquatic Center ARE OPEN TO TRAFFIC!!!!; “Spin easy” the last half mile into the Aquatic Center to ready your legs for the Run. There is 1 water Station about ½ way through the Course; for safety reasons NO headphones on the bike course!

Transition Area: Once again: WALK or jog with your bike once you get to the line. Teams: be aware of designated chip transfer areas!

Run Course: Run with your head, and your legs WILL catch up!  There is a water station  at the bridge and again at West Main St.

Have fun, and encourage others! Awards Ceremony immediately following at the Aquatic Center at approx 2 p.m.
